There are many wonderful exotic herbs that we use as herbalists, but we must never forget or underestimate our own masterful herbs that grow wild here in the UK.

The humble dandelion is one of them. With its punkish bright yellow flower heads and sweet-tasting roots, it stands at the crossroads between Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Western herbal traditions. A proof of the respect it garners.

It is known and understood to be restorative with strong ‘liver dredging’ properties that remove long-standing congestion. Considered an annoying weed these days by many it can grow in most environments, even able to push its way through grouting in pavers and tarmac, showing us its powerful and tenacious cleansing properties.

It is indicated in balancing the pancreas, helping with psoriasis, acne, gout & arthritis and through its detoxifying properties, it also helps to reduce inflammation.

It operates by reducing Qi stagnation of the liver, gallbladder, and intestines and is considered a carminative with digestive stimulating properties. It can even help to break up gallstones and has been shown in vitro studies to kill cancerous cells and prevent their growth.

The leaves can also be eaten and are bitter and also considered a digestive tonic with diuretic properties. Great addition to salads.
